Fishermen House

The "Fishermen House" project focused on the rehabilitation of a ruined former fishermen’s house in the center of Trafaria, a fishing village on the south bank of the Tagus River. The clients, a young family, sought a multifunctional home suitable for holidays and short-term rentals today, and as a primary residence in the future. Preserving the building’s original character while adapting it to contemporary living was essential.

The pre-existing site comprised the main house, a garage, and an annex. To generate a bright and fluid space, existing window openings were enlarged into doors, dissolving barriers between indoors and outdoors. A new entrance volume establishes a transition between the main building and the former garage, now converted into an independent bedroom.

The ground floor operates as an open plan, where the kitchen, living, and dining areas are fluidly connected, separated only by the staircase volume. On the upper floor, redesigning one slope of the roof with a 20° pitch and a large opening created comfortable head-height and natural light for two bedrooms and a bathroom.

In the courtyard, a new multifunctional volume was built—incorporating storage, a barbecue, an outdoor shower, and a bench. Functioning almost as a sculpture, it reorganizes the outdoor space by separating the parking area from the garden. An intervention that restores dignity to local traditional architecture.
